The basic responsibilities of the department are implementation of Public Distribution System, trade regulations of the essential commodities in public interest, procurement of food grains at support price, enforcement of weights and measurements rules and protection and promotion of consumer rights. Various works of the department, in detail are as follows:

1. Implementation of National Food Security Act, 2013 and Chhattisgarh Food and Nutrition Security Act, 2012.
2. To make available Food grains, Sugar, Salt, kerosene and other essential commodities at fixed rates through Fair Price Shops to ration card holders of Public Distribution System.
3. Implementation of the control orders of the department, issued under Essential Commodity Act,1955 so as ensure availability and supply of essential commodity to the consumers in the open market.
4. Procurement of Paddy and Maize at Support Price so that the farmers can get fair price for their produce.
5. Legal and Budget related work.
6. Protection and promotion of rights of the consumers through the State Consumer Dispute redressal Commission and District Consumer Dispute redressal Commission.
7. Compliance of the acts and rules related to weights and measurements.
8. To maintain the purity of the tools which are used in trade, business and industries and for human safety. To organize camps for verification/stamping of weights and measurements tools.
9. Inspection of business institutions and to take action against the persons responsible for irregularity, according to the rule. To give license to the manufacturers, sellers and repairers of weights and measurements tools.
10. Implementation of Right to Information Act.
11. Implementation of the services which comes under the authority of the department under "Chhattisgarh Lok Seva Guarantee".
12. Aadhaar enrollment in coordination with UIDAI.
